In India, the Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various civil services conducted by the Government of India, including mainly three services - the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service and the Indian Police Service. It is also known as the UPSC exam.

This exam is conducted in three phases:

  • A Preliminary Examination - including two objective type papers. (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II, popularly known as Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT)
  • The main examination consists of nine papers of the traditional (essay) type, of which two papers are qualifying and only seven are counted.
  • The final phase is the Personality Test/Interview
